Valuation. Why?
Insurance value, market value, ‘emotional’ value, ‘old’ valuations, original purchase value… and your instrument has them all. Chances are you do not know the accurate and true value of your violin, viola, cello, double bass or bow.
If you wish to sell, it is well worth getting it appraised to be clear as to what you may expect from a sale.
Apart from this, the first question any trade professional is going to ask you, when an instrument has had an accident, is about insurance.
If the instrument is appropriately valuated and suitably covered, the repair costs could be fully (or for the majority) being taken care of by your insurer.
If you are not adequately covered, you could be left with an unexpected repair bill or you could even be forced to start at the bottom of the instrument ladder all over again. This could set you back years or more and potentially shelf your enjoyment to play for more years to come.
Many insurers and underwriters offering specialised cover for musical instruments, require a clear valuation certificate from an independent violin trade professional, such as Bridge Street Violins.
Certification

We also handle valuations for probate. So if you are charged with establishing the value of a late friend’s or relative’s musical instrument or bow for probate, we can help.
With experience - unfortunately - in this field there is no better peace of mind than to have the value in writing by a third party independent professional.
Detailed Damage Reports
If or when the unthinkable has happened and your instrument has sustained some kind of damage due to an accident, Bridge Street Violins has the experience and expertise to provide you with a detailed damage report. With this damage report - often requested by your specialist insurers - you can get your claim started through your chosen Musical Instrument Specialist Insurer or Household Content Insurer.
Custom detailed repair estimates for insurers to get your instrument restoration project started are also available. There is a fee for this service, however if you get your instrument replaced or restored through Bridge Street Violins, the damage report fee can be waived and should later be discounted from the final repair- or replacement bill.
Bridge Street Violins is also experienced in working with insurers directly to get things sorted as efficiently as they can be.

The detailed report contains a lot of information, description of identifying marks, and analysis of findings on the instrument itself. We do need to see the instrument in person for this though.
