Goulding & Co London violin - ca 1800

£5,250.00

A charming and characterful violin, stamped Goulding & Co London on the back
Inside there are two different historical repairer notes.
One visible through - and written in line with - the bass side soundhole states: “Repaired by W. J. Bisset, Greenock 1895”
One written across and above the soundpost states: “Repaired By Boyd, Dundee 1844”

These repairers notes don’t tell exactly what was repaired, but it is possible they replaced a rib after sustained damage and the neck is also not believed to be original. No cracks and old repairs are visible, so the repairs undertaken appear to have been replaced parts, but serious enough to have to open the instrument to be able to write their notes.

An interesting and unique piece of British Violin Making history for sure!

The instrument itself plays wonderfully and is in fantastic condition given its age and pre-Victorian travels. Notably a historic wear mark on the treble C-bout top edge indicates frequent use paired with a low bridge.

Measuring 353mm on the back, bridge position is at 194mm and neck length is 128mm, resulting in an active string length of 324mm
This makes this instrument very easy to play and very approachable for a lady musician or a musician of slightly shorter statue
