Product Information

This exceptional 16" viola, crafted by the esteemed English luthier Colin G. Nicholls in 1994, is a fine example of expert craftsmanship and tonal excellence. Constructed from high-quality tonewoods, it features a well-aged spruce top and a beautifully flamed maple back, ribs, and scroll. The varnish is a warm, amber-brown, enhancing both the aesthetic and acoustic qualities of the instrument.

A wonderful instrument for the discerning professional from this ex-Hill & Sons instrument maker. This viola was completed in 1994 and bears the maker’s label as well as his signature.
Label reads: Colin G Nicholls, London Anno 1994, CNG and his signature half over the label and the inside back plate. The instrument is in superb condition at her vintage 30 years of age. No structural damages visible or repaired.

Regardless of its fullness in body size, the string length is a little shorter than standard so the viola will feel quite compact, making playing more comfortable and intonation less forced, whilst still keeping its full-bodied sound. An excellent combination!

A lovely vintage 16 1/4 inch viola from 1994, from the distinctive making hand of Colin G Nicholls.

The lower body of the instrument is proportionally large compared to the compact upper and middle sections, this shape produces a beautifully deep bass. The upper bout curves are compact for easy access when playing in the upper positions of the strings. Long C-bouts, leaving excellent room for a diverse bowing style. This viola responds well and is easy to play. String length 352mm; neck length 138mm; body stop 211mm, total body length (excluding button) 415mm (or 16 1/4 inch)

The body stop is 11mm shorter than a standard viola, the neck length has been proportionally shortened in line with the bridge position.

This instrument would be the perfect partner for a player who struggles stretching to interval distances of other 16 inch instruments.
