Product Information

This vintage, artisan-made cello is a fine example of English craftsmanship, attributed to William Piper and made around 1985 in Hanbury. Built with professional musicians in mind, it offers depth, projection, and refined tonal character, making it an excellent choice for advanced players seeking a high-quality instrument.

The front is crafted from medium-wide, strongly grained spruce, while the neck, ribs, and back are made from stunning slab-cut maple. The one-piece back plate is particularly striking, featuring a meandering grainline and an attractive natural pattern, complemented by the fine flames on the neck and scroll.

This full-size 4/4 cello has the following dimensions:

  • Back length: 743mm

  • String stop at bridge position: 395mm

  • Neck length: 280mm

  • Active string length: 688mm

Previously owned by a professional musician in a London-based orchestra, this instrument has been well-maintained and is now ready to support the next generation of dedicated players.

The vintage set-up has been checked by our luthier in residence, ensuring the instrument is in optimal playing condition. It has been fitted with a new set of Jargar strings, enhancing its tonal balance and response.

A truly special instrument, this William Piper cello offers both historical significance and outstanding playability, making it an excellent investment for serious musicians.

About the Maker

William Piper, born in 1948 in West Bromwich, West Midlands, is a distinguished English luthier renowned for his handcrafted string instruments. His journey into violin making began at the age of nine when he started playing the violin, sparking a lifelong passion for the craft.

In 1964, at sixteen, Piper commenced a twelve-year apprenticeship at Sydney Evans' violin shop in Birmingham. Under the mentorship of David Evans, he honed his skills in both instrument repair and construction, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavors.

After his apprenticeship, Piper established his own workshop in Birmingham before relocating to the Jinney Ring Craft Centre in Worcestershire. Over nearly six decades, he has crafted over 700 instruments, including violins, violas, and cellos, each reflecting his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Throughout his career, Piper has significantly contributed to English lutherie, blending traditional techniques with his unique artistic vision. His dedication to the craft has earned him a respected place among contemporary British violin makers.

Cello Care Tips

To keep your cello in great condition and ensure it maintains its best sound, we recommend the following care tips:

  • Storage: Always store your cello in a cool, dry place. Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity, as these can affect the wood.

  • Cleaning: Clean your cello regularly with a soft cloth to remove dust and rosin build-up. Be careful not to touch the varnish with your fingers.

  • String Care: Check your strings for wear and replace them when necessary. Avoid over-tightening the strings, as this can cause unnecessary stress on the instrument.

  • Bow Maintenance: Regularly check the tension of the bow and keep it properly tightened when not in use. Always re-hair the bow when necessary to maintain smooth performance.
