Product Information
The bridge plays a crucial role in the tone, projection, and overall playability of a string instrument. Even minor changes in position or shape can significantly affect performance. Our bridge adjustment service offers precise corrections to restore balance, improve response, and support long-term health of the instrument.
Bridge Straightening (when applicable):
If your bridge has started to bend — most often leaning forward toward the fingerboard — we may be able to straighten it using a careful steam-bending technique. This is only done when the bridge is structurally sound and the warping is not too advanced.
For violin and viola, a properly adjusted bridge should stand straight with the back (tailpiece side) at a 90-degree angle to the top plate.
For cello and double bass, the bridge may be slightly angled, with the front side (fingerboard side) a little fuller than the back, depending on the cut.
Feet Fit Only:
In this service, the feet of your bridge will be expertly refitted to match the arching of your instrument’s top plate. This ensures maximum surface contact, which is critical for efficient sound transmission from the strings to the body of the instrument.
Feet, Arch & Sound Trim:
This more extensive service includes:
Feet refitting, as above, for a precise fit to the top plate arch
Adjusting the top curve of the bridge for correct string height and spacing
Bridge trimming for tonal refinement, optimising the mass and shape of the bridge to enhance sound quality and response
Whether you're experiencing tonal imbalances, buzzing, or simply need a professional check-up, this service helps ensure your instrument performs at its best.
Please Note:
This service is only available through our Billinghay workshop. Instruments may be posted to us at the owner's risk, with return postage charged separately.
Sending your instrument to us?
Please follow these packaging guidelines:
Loosen the strings slightly before packing
Wrap the instrument in acid-free tissue paper or soft cloth
Ensure adequate padding; avoid direct contact between bubble wrap and varnish
Pop a note inside the package with your name, email address, phone number, and return address so we know who your instrument belongs to and can get in touch if needed.
Use a hard case or sturdy, well-padded box
Clearly label the package as FRAGILE
Not sure which level of bridge adjustment you need? We're happy to assess and recommend the most appropriate work for your instrument.
