Many shrinkage cracks originate from the sides of the saddle. Again it is made of a hardwood. Always leave a little space at the ends to allow for the softwood of the top plate to move as and when it wants.

The cold winter months are usually the ones where shrinkage cracks appear. Heated houses have low humidity, so the instrument’s wood loses in density and volume. Many people use humidifiers during these months, but they require regular checking on your part.

Allowing for a little room at either end massively lowers the likelihood for a big repair bill later down the line.
